FRANKLIN Dominic Reed conceded that he still has a lot of work to do, but he left Week 1 of the high school football season feeling very confident.
He and the Centennial Cougars overcame a slew of penalties by forcing turnovers and hammering the football for 20 fourth-quarter scores to launch the Jamaal Stewart era with a 34-14 win against crosstown foe Franklin.
“We did what we had to do,” said the four-time All-American. “I believe we figured out what the problem was, stuck together, and cleared our heads… this is the first of many.”
“It’s our time.”
Reed and Taner Lee both ran for 100 yards for the Cougars, who overcame 18 penalties on the flag-filled evening.
Centennial broke a 14-14 deadlock in the fourth quarter with three straight touchdowns. Reed scored seven and 14 yards in the fourth quarter, sandwiching a Lee touchdown.
“Our kids stuck together and overcame adversity,” said Stewart, Centennial’s first-year head coach. “They stayed together and demonstrated that when we do so, good things can happen even when bad things happen.”
“I’m proud of them because they kept their cool.”
