BALTIMORE — According to preliminary examinations, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow suffered a sprained right wrist in Thursday night’s 34-20 loss to the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium.
Burrow left the game in the second quarter and did not return. He was then seen in the changing area wearing a multi-layered shawl.
Taylor stated that Burrow was hit on the wrist earlier in the game before appearing to be in severe agony after delivering a 4-yard touchdown pass to running back Joe Mixon. Burrow made his final play of the game.
“It looked like he sprained his wrist,” Taylor observed. “Fell on it early in the game and then felt it on the touchdown pass.”
Taylor was unable to provide any additional information immediately following the game.
It’s unknown when Burrow initially experienced wrist pain. He was not contacted by any player after his touchdown pass to Mixon, and he instantly dropped to a deep squat on the field. Burrow entered the team’s medical tent for a few moments before returning to the sideline.
Burrow dropped the ball near the conclusion of his throwing motion while warming up with light tosses. In one case, he sank to the ground twice before gathering himself to try again.
He dashed to the visiting locker room after that scene.
Burrow completed 11 of 17 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. Back-up quarterback Jake Browning took over and went 8-of-14 for 68 yards and a late touchdown ball to wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase.
Prior to the game, Burrow was seen exiting the team plane with what appeared to be protective clothing on his wrist. Burrow had not been recorded on the injury report over the week, and Taylor stated that he was unaware of Burrow having a wrist problem.
“That was the first time I saw anything about it,” Taylor explained.
Taylor stated that he was “absolutely” confident in Burrow going into the game.
Browning, on the other hand, who had been constant in his preparation in case he needed to enter a game for Burrow, felt confident when called upon. Browning was also forced to sit out earlier this season as Burrow recovered from a persistent calf ailment suffered on the second day of training camp.
“I didn’t feel out of place or anything,” Browning remarked following the game. “But I didn’t feel that way when I walked in.” I’ve spent a lot of time on practise squads, waiting for an opportunity.”
Taylor stated that he had no information regarding the nature of Burrow’s injury other than a two-second exchange in which he heard about the wrist problem. Taylor stated that the loss of Burrow had no effect on the team’s morale.
“I didn’t feel like for one second the wind was out of our sails and guys were letting things happen,” said Taylor. “I feel like down-in, down-out on defence those guys were fighting their tails off.”
Burrow wasn’t the only one who suffered a serious injury on Thursday. Cam Taylor-Britt, the starting cornerback, left the game with a quadriceps injury. Taylor has no definitive information on the status of the second-year defender.
Cincinnati knew the stakes were high coming into the game against the division-leading Ravens (8-3). The Ravens completed a season sweep of the Bengals with Thursday’s victory, while Cincinnati remained bottom in the division and will face a tough battle in their postseason push regardless of Burrow’s availability.
Tyler Boyd, a Bengals wide receiver, said the club must unite even as it deals with Burrow’s injury.
“It hurts us a lot,” Boyd explained. “He’s our most talented player.” All we can do is continue to prepare, move forward, and go out there and make plays for Jake in any way we can.”
