Lucha Libre star Rey Misterio dies: WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio loses mentorship when his son Dominik dies

Dominik Mysterio’s grandfather and uncle of WWE legend Rey Mysterio, Rey Misterio Senior, died at age 66.

Rey Misterio Sr., whose real name was Miguel Angel Lopez Dias, has away. His son posted the news on Facebook. “I will keep you updated, friends and family. I regret to notify you that my father, Miguel Angel Lopez Dias, King Misterio Sr., passed away this morning.

“Thank you,” read Hijo De Rey Misterio Lopez’s Facebook message in Spanish.

Rey Mysterio Sr. rose to prominence in Mexico’s Lucha Libre scene, a professional wrestling concept renowned for its acrobatic manoeuvres and colourfully masked performers. But before making an appearance on the American independent circuit in the 2000s, the iconic wrestler made a few outings in WCW in the 1990s. For 2,374 days, he was the Pro Wrestling Revolution Tag Team Champion. Beginning in 1988, Rey Sr. was the WWA World Junior Light Heavyweight Champion. In 1995, he and Rey Mysterio Jr. won the WWA World Tag Team Championship, according to The Mirror.

Before retiring in 2009, Rey Mysterio Sr. made his stage debut in 1976 and continued to perform for 33 years. In 2023, he was admitted into the Hall of Fame.

What caused Rey Misterio Sr.’s death?
The cause of death for Miguel Angel Lopez Dias was not known at the time this report was put together. His death was announced only a week after the 76-year-old father of his brother, WWE legend Rey Misterio, Robert Gutierrez, passed away. Both Rey Misterio Jr. and his son Dominik Mysterio, who are currently involved with World Wrestling Entertainment, were coached by Miguel Angel Lopez Dias. According to accounts, Hijo De Rey Misterio also received training from his father.

Known as the “father of wrestling in Tijuana,” Misterio Sr. had a significant role in the expansion of AAA and Lucha Libre throughout Mexico. Dominik Mysterio posted pictures of his late grandfather on social media along with a straightforward black heart emoji, while Rey Jr. has not yet responded to the news of his uncle’s loss.
